Funding for Public Education

Education matters.

My husband and I have three children currently enrolled in AACPS schools (8th, 3rd, and 1st graders). In the fall of 2020, our fourth child will start kindergarten. My husband and I both attended public schools and graduated at the top of our classes. We are convinced that the educational opportunities provided in academically strong, equitable, progressive-minded public schools is critical to the foundation of a healthy, well-functioning society. To that end, we fully support our public schools in Anne Arundel County.

Given our $1.2 billion annual school system budget, I think it's embarassing that our per-pupil funding rate lags well behind the state average. (Anne Arundel Board of Education adds $10.9 million to schools budget, Capital Gazette, Feb. 22, 2018.) As your Council member, I will work to increase school system funding and give our educators the raises they deserve.
